While undergoing the phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK), the patient needs to remain conscious throughout the procedure so as to be able to perform the commands of the operating surgeon. During the procedure, the laser follows the patient’s eye and the patient should look at a particular point, indicated by the surgeon. Before the surgery, the eye is anaesthetised with special eye drops.
