I will turn 19 in two years’ time. I am planning to enrol on a fire-fighting programme and become a professional fire-fighter. There is, however, one obstacle I need to overcome, namely my vision defect. My refractive error is -3,5 dioptres in the left eye and -0,75 dioptres in the right eye. I would like to join the fire-fighting school as soon as I graduate from high school. Is it possible to undergo a laser vision correction procedure at the age of 19? To be eligible for the programme, I cannot have a vision defect greater than 09-1,0 dioptres without correction.

Laser vision correction procedure may be performed on a 19-year-old patient as long as the refractive error has already stabilised, which means it cannot increase more than by 0,25-0,5 dioptres per year. A visual acuity test is conducted during the preliminary qualifying examination. During the examination, your doctor will present the estimated result of laser vision correction.
