The laser vision correction surgery is always conducted under local anaesthesia in the form of eye drops. The whole procedure is too short (it takes approximately 15 minutes to perform it on both eyes) for the general anaesthesia to be applied. There is no need to unnecessarily burden the patient’s body.
Moreover, the patient is obliged to follow the surgeon’s orders during the procedure (e.g look in a particular direction or at a particular spot), which is why they have to remain conscious throughout the surgery.
