Eyelid correction surgery
Eyelid realignment procedures are performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia (injection). The average procedure time is about 1 hour. After a week, a follow-up visit is made, at which the sutures are removed.
Eyelid curl (entropion)
Curling of the eyelid margin and eyelashes toward the surface of the eye. It is one of the most common abnormal eyelid positions, observed mainly in the elderly, and affects the lower eyelid. The sensations that accompany the patient are eye pain, tearing, a feeling of sand under the eyelids or blurred vision.
This type of eyelid edge curl can cause damage to the cornea, leading to erosion and, in the next stage, corneal ulceration – this can even result in the need for a corneal transplant.
There are different methods of eyelid alignment correction, at the qualifying examination the doctor selects the most suitable one. We use a minimally invasive and most effective procedure using the Lateral Tarsal Strip (LTS) technique along with removal of excess skin.
Eyelid unwinding (ectropion)
Ectropion is an external protrusion of the eyelid margin. Patients may experience symptoms due to dry eyes (feeling of sand and pain under the eyelids). Eyelid regurgitation leads to inflammation of the conjunctiva (redness, stinging, mucous discharge).
Over time, it can result in drying of the ocular surface, corneal erosions and ulceration, and hypertrophy of the conjunctiva. On eyelid retraction, patients most often report bothersome tearing.
Surgical correction of lower eyelid retraction is carried out using the Lateral Tarsal Strip (LTS) technique in conjunction with eyelid plasty, as long as eyelid skin laxity is significant.
Surgery for drooping eyelid (ptosis)
Ptosis is a drooping of the eyelid that is not caused by excess skin, but by abnormal function of the upper eyelid lift muscle. It can affect one or both eyes and can occur from birth or be acquired later in life.
The upper eyelid levator and the superior disc muscle are the two muscles responsible for lifting the upper eyelid. During the procedure, they are shortened accordingly. At our Center, we perform ptosis surgery only if the function of the levator is preserved. To assess this, a qualifying examination is necessary.
Important information
- Anticoagulants should be discontinued for a certain period of time (depending on the duration of the drugs). These include, for example, drugs containing acetylsalicylic acid and anticoagulants. It is essential to consult with the attending physician about the possibility of discontinuing medications used chronically.
Makeup and false eyelashes (depending on the duration of the drugs). These include, for example, drugs containing acetylsalicylic acid and anticoagulants. The possibility of discontinuing medications used chronically should definitely be consulted with the attending physician.
Transportation – it is advisable to arrange for transportation home and a companion in advance, as immediately after the procedure the patient has limited field of vision due to the bandages on the eye(s).
