Laser vision correction

What is a laser eye surgery procedure?

Laser eye surgery involves modeling the corneal surface of the eye with an excimer laser. As a result, the image is properly focused on the retina, which means for the patient sharp vision, permanent correction effect and life without corrective glasses/lenses. The whole procedure is preceded by a thorough qualifying examination to exclude any potential contraindications and be able to safely perform the surgery without exposing the patient to any complications. After the procedure, it is important to take proper care of the eyes and follow the post-operative recommendations provided by the ophthalmic surgeon. The option most often chosen by Patients is an examination with a possible procedure on the same day, that is a One-day procedure.

What defects do we correct?

  • Short-sightedness: from -0.25 diopters to -14 diopters

  • Farsightedness: from +0.25 diopters to +6 diopters
  • Astigmatism: from 0.25 diopters to 6 diopters

  • A combination of the above refractive errors

What criteria do you have to meet to be qualified for a laser vision correction procedure?

  • Appropriate age – minimum 18 years (ideally above 21 since vision is more likely to have stabilised by then).
  • Stable visual defect – The patient has not required glasses/lenses of higher power for at least a year. We consider a visual defect to be at the stage of worsening if it has increased by about 0.5 to 1 diopter.

  • Good general health – if the patient has a chronic illness, he or she should be under the care of a specialist and take the medications prescribed by the doctor.

  • Adequate corneal thickness – to be assessed during the qualifying examination. Corneas that are too thin are a contraindication to laser vision correction.

  • No eye diseases – if the patient has cataracts, glaucoma or other degenerative diseases, he will not be qualified for laser vision correction temporarily or absolutely. Sometimes diseases will only be diagnosed during qualification.

Contraindications to the procedure

  • Very high visual defect, exceeding the laser’s working range.

  • Advanced Dry Eye Syndrome (DES).

  • Very thin cornea.

  • Injuries, infections, corneal diseases or deep scars on the cornea.

  • Untreated corneal cone.

  • Advanced glaucoma.

  • Affecting vision, unoperated cataract.

  • Retinal degeneration.
